Making MP3 Sermons nice and small

A typical MP3 song will be about 1MB / min. But being speech, sermons don’t need to be nearly as high quality as music. I did a bit of experimenting with the MP3 compression settings for sermons.

I’ve been getting 25 min sermons down to about 6MB, and still very clear and easy to listen to. That’s pretty good I reckon, that’ll upload and download nice and fast.

Here’s my export settings in QuickTime Player:

That’s great. Making it nice and small will make it easier for people to download and bring along with them. The sound quality isn’t really an issue, so long as the words can be heard clearly.

But I guess it really depends on the demographics of the listeners. If they have fast internet connections and prefer quality over speed, then reducing the file size might not be necessary.

However, if most, or even a significant part of the listeners have slower connections, then I believe it’d be a good idea to cater to their needs.
